Jojo Mayer Bio

Jojo Mayer was born on Jan. 18th, 1963 in Switzerland. He got his first drum set at the age of two and has been playing ever since. By 3 years old, Mayer was already performing live in Hong Kong. Jojo Mayer is basically a self taught drummer with years of experience being his belt. One of Mayer’s big influences is Buddy Rich, the legendary Jazz drummer. Jojo joined Monty Alexander’s jazz group at the age of 18 and played throughout Europe playing shows to thousands of people. In 1991, Mayer moved to New York where he started to play all over the place, like in studios and clubs. Some of the bands he has played with in his recent years are The Screaming Headless Torsos, Meshell n'dege Occello, Vernon Reid's science project, DJ Spooky, Emergency Broadcast Network, the Vienna Art Orchestra, Wayne Krantz, Harry Pepl, Gerald Veasley, Monty Alexander, John Zorn, James Blood Ulmer, John Medeski, Hiram Bullock, Depart, Wolfgang Puschnigg, The intergalactic Maiden Ballet, Harry Sokal, Mike Stern, Steve Coleman, Rebekka Bakken, Wah Wah Watson, and many more. The list is Huge!

One of Jojo Mayers biggest award and honor was being hails as a Drum God in the Modern Drummer Magazine. Jojo has gotten this title for his skilled and creative drum solos, and clinic work. Jojo endorses Sonar drums, playing on a decent sized drum set. He endorses Sabian cymbals as well, and Vic Firth drum sticks. He has played in many drum clinics around the world and is known for his incredible ability to teach the drums, and play in studios.
