Buddy Rich Bio

Bernard (Buddy) Rich was born on Sept. 30th, 1917. He started playing the drums at the early age of 18 months, and was the second highest paid child performer of his time! Buddy Rich is by far one of the best drummers to ever live, playing for hundreds of shows, artists, and bands. His extreme control with the traditional stick grip gave him the ability to play fast solos and jazz beats. Buddy rich never went to music school. His passion for the drums gave him the motivation to become one of the best drummers of all time. Buddy Rich was close friends with Frank Sinatra, in which he played for in many occasions. He also played for the Buddy Rich Big Band.

Buddy Rich’s popularity only grew in time. His outgoing personality won the hearts of many listeners as he appeared on many shows like the Tonight Show, and I love Lucy. He is famous for his drum solos and battles with such drummers like Gene Krupa. Rich started out by playing mainly jazz and big band, however, as the music scene changed, he adapted to the new rock style of drumming. Buddy Rich helped Ludwig create a name for them by endorsing their drum set. The classic Ludwig bass drum snare and tom set up became a popular drum design of his time.
